Abu Dhabi runs a civil marriage process that does not require witnesses and issues a certificate after the ceremony. What decides whether an application goes smoothly is almost never the ceremony — it is whether the documents behind it were prepared correctly and whether both applicants were eligible in the first place.
Couples come to this with one of two questions. Either they are already in the UAE and want to marry without travelling home, or they are marrying here and need the certificate to work in another country afterwards. The process is the same. The preparation is not.
What the process involves
An application is assembled, submitted, and followed by a ceremony at which the marriage is concluded and the certificate issued. Abu Dhabi does not require witnesses for a civil marriage, which removes a coordination problem that catches out couples with no family in the country.
Standard and express handling are both available. Express is worth taking when a date is already fixed — a venue booked, leave approved, or a visa application waiting on the certificate.
Eligibility comes first
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that costs the most when it goes wrong. Whether a couple can marry under the Abu Dhabi civil process depends on the circumstances of both applicants, not just one, and residency status changes what is required rather than automatically ruling anyone out.

The documents behind it
Applications rest on identity documents and, depending on circumstances, evidence of marital status and the dissolution of any previous marriage. Where those documents were issued abroad, they usually need attestation before they can be relied on here — which is the work we already do, so a file that needs both is handled in one place rather than passed between two firms.
Foreign-language documents generally need legal translation, and the order matters: translating before a document has finished its attestation chain means paying for it twice.
After the certificate
A marriage certificate issued in Abu Dhabi is a UAE document. If it will be used abroad — for a spouse visa, a name change, or a family file in another country — it needs MOFAIC attestation and then legalisation by that country's embassy here. The UAE is not party to the Apostille Convention, so an apostille is not available on it.
