Sponsoring Your Family on a UAE Golden Visa: How the 10-Year Residency Works

A Golden Visa is not only for the person who qualifies. Holders can bring a spouse and children onto the same ten-year term — and the paperwork that decides it is mostly attestation.

The Golden Visa is usually described in terms of the person who qualifies — the investor, the specialist, the graduate. Less attention goes to the part that matters most to people with families: the holder can sponsor a spouse and children, and those dependants sit on the same ten-year term.

That is a meaningful difference from standard employment residency, where the family's status is tied to a job and has to be renewed alongside it. Here the family's residency runs with yours.

The paperwork is mostly attestation

The family file is not really a visa exercise. It is a document exercise, and the documents have to be provable outside the UAE before anyone here can act on them.

A marriage certificate issued abroad needs the full chain: legalisation in the issuing country, then the UAE embassy in that country, then MOFA in the UAE. The same applies to each child's birth certificate.

This is where family applications stall. The sponsor's own file is in order, the sponsorship is approved in principle, and then the marriage certificate turns out to carry no UAE embassy stamp — a gap that has to be closed in the country of issue, often by post, while the rest of the application waits.

Translation comes after attestation, not before

Any document not in Arabic needs certified legal translation. The order matters more than people expect.

Attestation stamps go onto the original. A translation produced before those stamps exist will not show them, and will be rejected — so the document gets translated a second time, at full cost. Attest first, translate the attested document, submit both together.

Who counts as a dependant

A spouse is straightforward, provided the marriage certificate is attested.

Children are more conditional. Sons are generally covered while they remain in full-time study or are otherwise dependent; daughters are covered while unmarried. Where a child sits outside those conditions, a different route is usually needed, and it is better to establish that at the start than to discover it mid-application.

Children born in the UAE are a partial exception. A UAE-issued birth certificate does not need foreign embassy legalisation, but it typically still requires MOFA attestation and, depending on which authority is processing, legal translation.

Where to start

Work backwards from the documents. Find every certificate the family file will need, then check each one for a complete attestation chain and a name that matches the passport.

Anything issued abroad and never attested is your long pole — start there, because that is the step measured in weeks and handled in another country.

Questions & Answers

Their residency is issued against yours, so it runs to the same expiry. If your visa is renewed, theirs follows.

Yes, if it was issued outside the UAE. It has to be legalised in the issuing country, then by the UAE embassy there, then by MOFA in the UAE. An un-attested certificate is the single most common reason a family file cannot be opened.

A UAE-issued birth certificate does not need foreign embassy legalisation, but it usually still needs MOFA attestation and, depending on the authority, legal translation.

It depends on their status. Sons are generally covered while they are in full-time study or otherwise dependent, and daughters while unmarried. Beyond that, a separate route is usually required.

After. Attestation stamps are applied to the original document, and a translation produced beforehand will not carry them — which means paying for the translation twice.
